Over the years we have gotten many ideas of some wonderful places to visit. We have talked about starting to blog about some of our adventures to help share some of our great experiences that we have been on with you so that you may enjoy them as well. While not all our trips have been remarkable success stories, they have all been learning experiences for us. They say the best way to learn is from the mistakes of others so hopefully you can even learn from some of our mistakes.
Our latest adventure was supposed to be a two-night three-day hiking trip in Dolly Sods Wilderness. Dolly Sods Wilderness is a part of the Monongahela National Forest near Davis WV. A quick search on the internet will provide lots of information on the area and some beautiful pictures which really does not do it justice, especially in the fall. Dolly Sods has many trails that are notoriously muddy so with the dry summer we had we were looking forward to a dryer experience than we might normally have. We planned for the first week of October so that we could avoid the heat (problem from last year’s section hike of the Appalachian Trial) and get some fall color. We also though that this would be a great break before busy season kicked in with Fall and Christmas photos for #DDP. While Dolly Sods can see snow in October, we were hoping to also avoid that for this hiking experience since one of us does not like the cold like the other one!
Notice I said we planned for all these things above. What we did not plan for was Hurricane Ian dumping rain in the area starting on the Friday before our scheduled Sunday arrival. We ended up delaying our departure until Monday since it was still raining on Sunday morning in hopes that it would dry up some before we got. Do not get me wrong we were not expecting a complete miracle and completely dry trails especially after seeing some of the Facebook posts for the area showing the streams and how fast they were moving. A quick replan and shortening of the 20ish mile hike to around half of that and sticking to the Northern Area where we did not have as many water crossings (in theory), and we were a go with a new plan and agreement that the plan could change at any given time.
After arriving at Bear Rocks Trailhead around 1PM we layered up (little colder than planned) and headed out. Less than 10 minutes into the hike we ran into our first small stream that required some effort to find a place to get across that did not require walking through ankle deep water at the beginning of the hike. We also did not realize how much of a sign of things to come this truly was going to be either. That would start being clearer though when we met the next group of people who were heading back out and warned us of knee-deep water ahead!

Dolly Sods Wilderness, WVThe beginning of our trek. Dolly Sods Wilderness, WVThe beginning of our trek. Dolly Sods Wilderness, WVThe beginning of our trek.     Onward we pressed though since we had our trusty Crocs with us for wading through the creeks if necessary. The further in though the wetter the trail become, and we started dealing with water running down the trail as well. We just watched our footing to try and find spots that were not deep or walk on rocks that were sticking up. Nothing we could not handle and honestly not really anything we didn’t expect based on the weather the few days beforehand.  However, once we got to the junction of Dobbin Grade Trail and Bear Rocks Trail the water running down Dobbin Slashing Trail was more than ankle deep and what did not turn to run down Bear Rocks Trail ran on down Dobbin Grade. It was moving quickly too and there was no way around it that we could see. This is also where we started bumping into more of the people who were ahead of us trying to find different routes as well. One person said that Dobbin Grade had an actual water fall on the trail further down it and was impassible and only got worse. Another lady that we followed in said that she turned around when it goes kneed deep on Bear Rocks Trail and was only getting worse. This was her fourth attempt at a trail that day. She was turning around heading back to a campsite she found shortly after entering another trail that was deserted at the time she was there. We attempted to skirt the deepest part of the water to find that the trail only had faster water running down it and decided to call it and go look for a campsite somewhere else as well.
Fortunately for us the Red Creek Campground was mostly empty when we got there. The weather had discouraged enough people to stay away, and we claimed our spot. We ate dinner and got set up and then headed back to Bear Rocks to watch the sunset and take some pictures there. It was then back to the campsite for the night and a fresh start for the next day or so we thought.
In reality though the night turned out to be a true check of our gear and a teaching experience for us. We learned that we need upgrade some more of our gear if we are going to be sleeping in the tent in 37-degree weather. This is especially true if the ground is wet as well though we did survive the night. I would have been warmer if I hadn’t lost my hoodie in the sleeping bag somewhere though I don’t know if I could have zipped the bag if I had managed to get in on anyway.

Chocolate Covered Amaretto Strawberries https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2014/2/chocolate-covered-amaretto-strawberries I have been making  these strawberries for my husband for such a long time. They are so yummy and easy to make. First you need a bowl of clean, dry strawberries.

Assemble all your ingredients and supplies, a bowl of strawberries, your favorite amaretto, a flavor injector and chocolate.

Next, take 1 bag of milk chocolate chip, I used Hershey's but Ghiradelli is my favorite, and melt in a double boiler. Be careful not to use too much water or it will splash into the chocolate. To prevent your chocolate from seizing, add 1tablespoon of shortening while the chocolate is melting. I found that it's best to melt on medium to low heat and stir frequently. While your chocolate is melting, fill your flavor injector with amaretto and start injecting! Inject at the stem area, try not to overfill. You will have a little running out, but that's okay.

Once your chocolate is nice and smooth, carefully dip in the chocolate holding onto the stem. Carefully place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.  After cooled place into an airtight container. Enjoy. :)

ZW {Aicardi Syndrome Awareness} https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2013/10/zw-aicardi-syndrome-awareness This past June I had the honor along with my good friend, Danielle from Bella's Tutus to spend some time with beautiful Zoey and her family. Zoey was diagnosed with Aicardi Syndrome and suffers daily, multiple seizures. There is only 1000 known cases of Aicardi Syndrome in the US. In July she will underwent a Hemispherectomy to remove the left side of her brain. Hopefully after surgery she will be 98-100% seizure free. After a few week couple stay, Zoey is doing much better. Please visit and like Prayers, Love and Support for Zoey to encourage her and her family and to follow her journey.

Miracles for Melanie Fundraiser https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2013/6/miracles-for-melanie-fundraiser Clients and faithful followers,

Instead of participating in a fundraiser, which I enjoy so much, I am hosting my first ever event.

Back in October at my Trick or Treat Customer Appreciation Event I had the pleasure of meeting Melanie Cole.  She showed up with Raggedy Anne and Andy and we hit it off immediately.  I had the pleasure of doing a follow-up  photo shoot with her beautiful family.

I remember thinking “what a perfect family”.  They were loving and had such a  good time together.  A few months later those thoughts came back to haunt me.  I found out Melanie, a young mom of 2 kids and wife had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

It is my goal to raise $2000 for Miracles for Melanie, to help support her family in this terrible time.  I plan to do this with the help of my friends, family and you!

On August 3 I will be hosting an event from 9-3pm.   I will have several summer themed sessions set up; including a patriotic theme.  Sessions are 20 minutes and you get 5-10 edited digital images with a print release.  Not to mention you get the satisfaction of knowing 100% of the proceeds go to this family in need.   This will be the only opportunity for summer themed mini’s this year, so book now!

In addition,  my good friends are coming together to have a raffle that same day.  Vendors include 31, Bella’s Tutus, The Barefoot Barn, a B.A. D. idea and many more.  Yummy baked goods and artwork will be available for purchase….all proceeds going to Miracles for Melanie.

What are you willing to risk? https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2013/6/what-are-you-willing-to-risk I don’t like change.  I like comfortable.  Change is uncomfortable.  That being said, I am coming upon a major birthday milestone, the big 4 0!  Luckily, Gary has already paved the path to 40 in our house, but still it’s a big deal and has made me really think where I want to be professionally.

I love my job and can’t imagine not taking your family photos.  Newborns, family sessions, senior portraits…you name it, I love them all!  But I have been hearing this whisper inside me to branch out and do more.  Well after this weekend the little whisper has turned into full out screaming and whistling “hey, over here, look at me over here…”!

The last year I have been dreaming of ways to take “boudoir” photos, although I HATE that word and if anyone has any other words to describe my vision, please, please share them with me.  My vision is taking women’s photos to make them feel beautiful and empowered. I’m thinking tasteful, classy, elegant.   I see pictures of ALL women, ALL shapes and sizes embracing their inner beauty.  I see it each time I look into my camera lens and want to share it with you.

I have been seeing something like this for almost a year now.  One issue has been location, having an indoor studio.  I have been talking to my sister and other girlfriends, playing with words, trying to get this up and going and just hearing the little whisper within that this something I need to do.  Fast forward to this past weekend, when the whisper became an obnoxious phone call and full on shout!  It’s a long story that I will blog about later.  Long story short…a chance encounter, a really, REALLY obnoxious sister, 2  sleepless nights and a few days later, voila!!

I don’t know how this is going to work and I am scared.  It is unfamiliar and change and change is oh so uncomfortable!  Will you take the risk with me?  I need the support of my faithful clients to make this dream happen.  Please pass this along and consider doing it yourself!!    I am not sure if this fits fully into my vision of taking photos to celebrate the beauty of women and empowering them, but I am sure it is what is calling me right now to lead me into that direction.  It’s summer, right?  Instead of soaking your feet and playing it safe, let’s go to the deep end and jump off the diving board!  Let’s do a  cannon ball screaming and laughing our heads off together.  Will you take the risk with me?

Once Upon A Time https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2012/10/once-upon-a-time

Once upon a time there was a little boy name Cooper.  He was the sweetest, smartest, cutest, silliest 5 and ½ year old ever.  Well that is how my little nephew likes to start his stories!  For those of you familiar with my work, you have seen his cute little face before.  Some of you had him as my “assistant” a few times.

Cooper is such a character!  He has been in love with superheroes since he was three.  He is well known in his community for always being in costume or having a secret identity.  I think this is a result of his imagination and intellect.  This boy loves to learn and then he loves to quiz us adults on what he learned.  There is nothing like being taught about the planets by a 5 year old.

He has this little way about him that endears him to people.  He has manners and is polite when need be.  Adults, teachers, coaches, they all meet him and just love him; he always seems to be the focal point.  The funny thing is, he doesn’t realize it and is actually quite shy.  He has lots of little “quirks” that make him unique and stand out.

This is one of my first and favorite pictures.

Ever since he has been a baby, he has rubbed him mom’s chin to fall asleep, or to say goodbye, if he is tired or nervous.  In between takes at a session he was sleepy, so mom bent down to talk to him, he rubbed her chin….I had my camera ready and one of the best pictures ever was taken.  These are the moments I am always trying to capture for you!

Lastly, he is one of the silliest little people out there.  He has this infectious laugh that just makes you laugh with him.  I’m laughing now thinking of him throwing his head back and cracking up.

I may be a teeny tiny bit biased, but I do think he is the sweetest, smartest, cutest silliest 5 ½ year olds out there.  For those of you that have met him, what do you think?!

Trick or Treat in the Park https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2012/9/trick-or-treat-in-the-park

Have I mentioned yet how much I love this time of year?   Well, I love this time of year!  I love everything about fall.  This also happens to be my busiest time of year, with senior pictures and family sessions for Christmas.  However, I always set aside a Saturday to say thank you to all of you who have made my dream a reality.

Mark your calendar for Saturday October 13.  I throw the best trick or treat/ fall party at Pen Mar Park.  For those of you not familiar with the location, it is a park right on the MD/PA border with one of the most fantastic views ever!   The leaves will be at full peak and the scenic overlook goes forever.

You may be wondering what else is there other than this fabulous view.  It’s a party people!  I will have games, food, trick or treating in the park and lots more.  Did I mention the food?

There is no cost to attend and participate.  Have the kids wear their costumes, you too if you want!  My adult volunteers will be wearing superhero capes so you know who to ask if you need help.  It was a huge hit last year!

In addition to all of this fun, I will have a photo booth set up, decorated for fall to take pictures if you like.  I do have to charge $20 for the pictures, just to cover the cost of my supplies and postage.  You will get 5-10 images on a CD mailed to you.  This is a great way to capture your little ones in their costumes.

This day is my way of thanking you for being loyal clients of mine.  If you have not had a session with me yet, come anyway!  I will be displaying my work along with Christmas session information and gift ideas.  If you haven’t scheduled your family session for the holidays yet, bring your calendar because I am filling up fast!  Hope to see you there!!

Kat Hargest https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2012/9/kat-hargest I have so many hopes and dreams for my photography business.  I would love to have my own studio one day and travel to exotic places for sessions.  One dream of mine is to work with a charity to take photos for kids who are terminally ill.  I would love to capture some happy memories of them for their families to cherish.

A while back I had the opportunity to make one of these goals a reality.  My sister called and asked if she could donate my services.   A fellow mom she had met thru a moms group was diagnosed with cancer.  The group was providing meals to help  fellow mom,  Kat Hargest while she was undergoing treatments.   Instead of food, my sister wanted to give Kat family photos.  I loved the idea.  I had no idea what kind of gift was in store for me.

Kat was the most encouraging, enthusiastic person I ever knew.  Her emails were full of !!’s and ALL CAPS showing her love of life.  And it wasn’t phony or preachy…she really loved God and this life He gave her.  Her is a piece of one of Kat’s posts:

I AM BLESSED! Jesus is using me in HUGE ways!! i've never once asked why i have stage 4 lung cancer (non smoker.. 10 percent of the population)! He is with me always and i see His amazing grace every minute of every hour of every day!! He is my rock and He is my healer!!

Can you imagine such strength?  Such optimism?

That was the only time I saw Kat.  She lost her battle with cancer recently.   Never has one person in such a short time frame made such an impression on me.  I am told that many others feel the same way.  For a few hours I was given the gift of watching a family love each other and love the life they were given.   Joy, that is what Kat gave me.  Go ahead, while you are online google “joy”.  Don’t worry, I will wait…and don’t cheat, it only takes a minute.

Isn’t that beautiful?  Thank you Kat Hargest.  You inspired many and will be missed by all.

MOPS of Frederick is having a pancake breakfast fundraiser this Saturday for Kat's family. I hope that all my local fans can make it to the Frederick Church of the Brethren to help support this amazing family.

Fall is Here! https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2012/9/fall-is-here

I love this time of year; crisp breeze, leaves changing colors, apple pie and so much to do!  Did you ever notice once Fall gets here every weekend is so busy until January?  I decided to squeeze in some Autumn fun this weekend in between sessions.

I was lucky enough to start my Saturday seeing this little guy again.

You should hear how he says his name, it's just too cute.

We decided to check out Reynolds Farm in Waynesboro since I have heard so much about it and had my nephew all day (there will more on this character to come as you will see him frequently and he is a blog entry in and of itself!).  It's a great family fun spot.  Admission is reasonable and games are around $1.   We did the corn maze, went on a hay ride and picked out a pumpkin.  I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Then it was off to pick apples.  After all, I did have an apple pie to make!

Today was a beautiful day to be outside.

What's the perfect ending to such a great day?  Apple pie as promised of course!  This was by far my best apple pie yet, just ask Cooper....he had 4 slices!

I hope you had a great weekend as well.  I have lots of sessions coming up and a Halloween mini-session so check back in soon!

Good night Gracie https://www.dragonflydreamphotography.com/blog/2012/9/good-night-gracie Two years ago on a dreary May morning, our sweet dog Nikki passed away.  She was our girl; our pride and joy.  We weren’t sure we could ever get another dog after losing Nikki.   We tried to rescue a wild scrappy dog named Abby a year later; she needed more than we could give her so we ended up giving her to a family with lots of grand kids and dogs to play with her.  We just weren’t ready.

Then came Gracie.

I got a call from my cousin, who rescues animals and was determined to get us another dog. (Thanks Daniel!)  He said he found the perfect dog and then he played dirty!  He told us Gracie’s story.  Sometime this summer a not so nice person decided to load up 2 puppies and drop them off a mile from the local shelter( really not so nice person, you couldn’t go one more mile!!).  A man on his way to work in the middle of the night found Gracie along the road, she had been hit.  He moved her safely to the side of the road and called the police. When the police came they found a little male puppy perfectly fine and took him to the shelter, not knowing that Gracie was close by.  The kind man stopped on his way home from work the next morning to see if Gracie had been picked up. Poor Gracie had been out all night in a storm, all day in 95 degree heat and was covered with flies.  He called the Antietam Humane Society who took her to the Wayne Height Animal Hospital where they were able to save her by amputating her leg.

We got the call to come meet the sweetest little puppy.  So we went and after hearing her story how could you not take her home!  Gary wasn’t as convinced she was “our girl”, so we fostered her for two weeks even though I knew all along she was ours, right dear ;).  After two weeks who wouldn’t fall in love with that sweet face?

Gracie has been an amazing surprise for us.  She loves to snuggle and sit on my lap.  Her little tail never stops wagging….she is just so happy.  And she can run!  She can run so fast. I am teaching her how to sit and even though she can’t shake, I am determined to teach her “high five”.  Gracie has decided to sleep with us, right in between of us….we found our girl.  So for now, Goodnight Gracie.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped Gracie, the kind man who stopped twice on the street, the Antietam Humane Society, Wayne Heights Veterinary Clinic and Daniel, I knew you would find us our dog.
